To the left, Via Turazza leads to Piazza San Giovanni and the Pisan-Romanesque flank of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (cathedral), noted for its splendid marble portal with sweeping flower-motif lunette. The church itself was consecrated in 1120, amplified in the 13th century and restructured internally in the 16th century when the columns covered with pink stucco were added by Leonardo Ricciarelli. In the interior are numerous works of art, Including the polychrome wooden group of the Deposition (1228; second chapel to the right), two marble angels by Mino da Fiesole (12th-century; Presbytery), the magnificent wooden Virgin of the Clerics by Francesco da Valdambrino (North Transept) and statuette of St John the Baptist by Andrea Sansovino (taken from the baptismal font in the Baptistery). There’s also a stunning pulpit with panels by great artists such as Fra Bartolomeo, a Nativity terracotta attributed to Andrea della Robbia, and an Adoration of the Magi fresco by Benozzo Gozzoli. Standing in front of the Duomo in the center of the piazza, the octagonal Battistero (Baptistery) stands proud under its green and white marble dressing. Constructed in the second half of the 13th century, the building is ornamented with a Romanesque marble portal and cupola. Inside, it’s simple in design with the altarpiece designed by Mino da Fiesole and an old baptismal font by Andrea Sansovino both taking pride of place.
